A Colin the caterpillar cake was a staple in most British households for parties and birthdays. A couple of months ago Marks and Spencer’s took legal action against Aldi for their version of the caterpillar cake; this was interesting due to other supermarket retailers also having their own dupes of the cake.
It made me think about how social is taking over the marketing game. 66% of the UK's population actively use social media, although I am not part of that 66%, I am not ignorant to the fact of how incredibly addictive it can be to become part of such matters when they become public. Twitter users did not hold back and showed avid support for Aldi's Cuthbert cake.
Social is an incredible marketing tool. It reaches everyone on the platforms, and everyone likes to share their opinions and have their say - which made this viral cake affair even more enjoyable to watch unfold.
